Maddie Update Week of July 3rd

Hi Everyone,

Thank you again for your continued prayers.

Maddie has continued to be medically and neurologically stable. Medically, she has had noisy and rapid breathing for the past few days (not due to her lungs, but to due her upper airway collapsing as she breathes). It’s not dangerous as long as her oxygen levels are stable and they have been. This only happens some of the time when she’s awake/irritated, but can be pretty frightening if we didn’t have the monitors. It’s a little nerve wrecking to think about going home with, but the doctors said it will improve over time as her muscle tone gets better. When she’s asleep, she looks and sounds very peaceful, so that’s why the doctors believe it’s an upper airway issue and not something with her lungs. Neurologically, she’s been stable, but one promising improvement is that her right eyelid has started to open a little bit a few times for the past two days!

Maddie is having a procedure done a little after noon (12:15pm) to insert a g-tube (gastrosnomy tube) into her stomach for feeding since her recovery may take a while and she won’t be able to eat enough by mouth in the short-term. She’ll still be able to eat by mouth, but until she reaches her goal amount, the g-tube will allow us to supplement whatever she doesn’t eat by mouth. Although this is a common procedure, there’s still anesthesia and a breathing tube involved, so we pray there are no complications. If her recovery goes well and no other issues arise, we may be looking at discharge next week.

Again, we pray for patience as we continue with Maddie’s recovery. Jen decided to leave her job and focus on Maddie the next few months so this should relieve some stress on the family.

Thank you so much for your thoughts and prayers- we’re so blessed to have a wonderful church family.
